AHS holds a Ph.D. in history from Vanderbilt University and specializes in the intellectual history of speculative fiction (including the Gothic, science fiction, and fantasy) as well as the North American frontier. She lives with her husband, Dr. Larry M. Hall, in the Appalachian highlands of Virginia, USA.

AHS serves as faculty at Signum University and staff for the StarShipSofa podcast.
